“When a flower doesn’t bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.”
Houseplant Addicts is a place where all plant lovers can unite. Check out our entire network on Facebook & visit us on Instagram! For now, let’s get to know our latest featured member, Kristy Kilgallen!
I am a twenty-nine year old special educator living with Lupus. I love my plants, students, animals and husband-to-be. I taught science for years before chronic illness forced me out of the general education classroom but have LOTS of science lab equipment for sale on my Etsy Store, MrsKsShop. You can find me on social media by searching for Kristy Kilgallen on Facebook or kristykilgallen on Instagram.
How did you discover your love of plants?
Growing up my mother always had plants around the house, even when we lived in teeny-tiny apartments. She taught me about propagating plants, growing your own crops whenever possible, and starting plants from seeds. As an adult I fell in love with plants again when I was diagnosed with Lupus. My mobility became severely limited, I could no longer go outside or be social like I once had been able to. I found I could garden indoors while sitting at a table, and even if it was just for a few minutes a day, it was a great boost to my mood.
How have plants/plant care changed your life for the better?
Plants help keep me sane! I find the resiliency of plants to be extremely inspirational; it helps me to keep in perspective that there is always room for new growth and that growth is happening, even when it doesn’t seem like it! They have been a huge source of comfort for me throughout my chronic illness, which I have lived with for almost a decade now.
What’s your favorite plant tip?
My favorite plant tip is to use the top of your refrigerator or hot water heater as an incubator when starting new seeds indoors. The heat from these appliances helps to give your new plants a boost and the best part is it’s free! Plus these parts of your home are typically unused space, which leaves your other flat surfaces available for more plants! 🙂
What is your favorite plant?
My favorite plants are any and all hibiscuses! I love them, and so do my pet rabbits…but even when they manage to hop up and give my hibiscus plants a heavy “pruning” by chewing them, these plants always come back and bloom as beautifully as ever!
If you had any plant to give to a special person, which would you choose? Why?
If I had any plant to give to a special person I would give them a Variegated Monstera. These plants are so sought after that they would brighten the day of many of my plant loving friends!
“Imagine your mind like a garden and your thoughts are the seeds. You get to choose what seeds you plant in it. You can plant seeds of positivity, love and abundance. Or you can plant seeds of negativity, fear and lack. You can also spend time trying to take care of everyone else’s garden. Or you can work on making yours beautiful and attract other beautiful people to your garden.”@_Jackewoodard
“May the flowers remind you why the rain was necessary.”
“When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.”
